Perched atop the ochre cliffs of Morocco's Atlantic coast are Mirleft and Sidi Ifni, two laid-back towns that feel a world away from bustling Agadir (located two hours’ drive north). They have long been getaway destinations for in-the-known European RVers and caravaners but offer plenty of charm for anyone wanting a quiet beachside escape and uncrowded surf.
We spent a long weekend exploring Mirleft and Sidi Ifni a few years ago and it's one of my most memorable experiences in Morocco. I loved wandering through the whitewashed streets of Sidi Ifni and watching the ochre-coloured cliffs of Mirleft seemingly alight at sunset - just magic!
In this Ultimate Travel Guide to Mirleft and Sidi Ifni, discover everything you need to know about exploring this off-the-beaten-path region of Morocco, including things to do in the area, transport logistics and the best places to stay.

Things to do in Mirleft and Sidi Ifni
Enjoy the views from Fort Tidli
Perched atop a rocky outcrop overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the abandoned Fort de Tidli stands as a relic of Morocco's colonial past. This military fortress was constructed in the 1930s during the French Protectorate era, with its sturdy ramparts and crenellated towers built from the russet-hued stones of the surrounding cliffs. Though long deserted, the fort remains an imposing sight and is the perfect spot to wander while soaking up panoramic views across the coastline.
Stroll through Sidi Ifni’s medina
Exploring Sidi Ifni’s historic medina provides a fascinating glimpse into Morocco's storied past. The winding alleys and narrow streets are filled with authentic cafes and bustling souks selling all manner of goods. Browse stalls piled high with brilliantly coloured textiles, aromatic spices and handmade leather goods or haggle for stunning silver jewellery crafted in nearby Tiznit. Don't miss a visit to the 11th-century Sidi Ifni Mosque, with its towering minaret and intricate mosaics having stood the test of time.
Is Sidi Ifni worth visiting?
Shop for handcrafted silver in Tiznit
A 45-minute drive inland from Mirleft is the walled town of Tiznit, which has long been famed for its handcrafted silver. The city's origins are deeply intertwined with the Almoravid dynasty, a powerful Amazigh Muslim empire that ruled between the 11th and 12th centuries. Later, Tiznit held significance for the Alawite sultans, with its walled medina (a labyrinth of narrow streets and alleys) encircled by five gates built in the classic Alawite style.
Beyond its political history, Tiznit is also famed for its traditional crafts. Using local materials like silver and semi-precious stones, Tiznit's skilled artisans have long fashioned ornate daggers, saddles and rifles. Today, the finest jewellery workshops in southern Morocco are found here. Not only can you watch skilled artisans hammering and shaping precious metals but also purchase necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings to take home.
Soak up the sights, sounds and smells of the fish market
Both Mirleft and Sidi Ifni have lively fish markets that kick into gear in the afternoon when the fishermen return each day. They’re not only atmospheric places to watch local comings and goings but you can shop for some of the freshest fish you’ll ever set eyes on. As is common in Morocco, there are usually a handful of places near the markets that will grill up whatever you purchase and cook it just the way you like it.
Photograph the rock arch of Legzira
Partway between Mirleft and Sidi Ifni is Legzira Beach, which is known for its incredible natural rock arch extending out over the water. It’s a mesmerising sight, especially at sunset when its red sedimentary rocks glow like embers. While there were once three such arches on the beach, the relentless pounding of the tides has reduced these natural wonders to just one. Beyond its main attraction, the secluded beach is also an ideal spot for a quiet stroll or a fossick in the tidal pools.
Things to do in Mirleft and Sidi Ifni
Relax on Marabout Beach
Aptly named after the ancient tomb that perches above its sandy shores, Marabout is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful beaches near Mirleft. It retains a magical aura, especially in the early morning and late afternoon light. Large boulders scatter the beach and while the surf can be too intense for swimming at times, it’s still a wonderful place for walking and enjoying the serenity.
Go surfing at Plage Sauvage
Four kilometres south of Mirleft lies a wild beach that is well worth seeking out. Accessible by a set of stairs leading down from the cliffs above, Plage Sauvage offers visitors an untamed coastal landscape and some of the best surf in the region. Those looking to catch waves can rent boards and wetsuits from one of the local outfitters or book in for a private surf lesson. A lovely coastal trail connects Plage Sauvage to the nearby beach of Sidi Ouafi, making for a beautiful afternoon hike.
