However, the rental company might try to charge you for these damages when you bring the car back, so it’s best to be comprehensive in your initial inspection.
Usually, the attendant will give you a diagram of the vehicle and help you with the inspection, but if there are numerous imperfections, it can be challenging to document everything properly. I recommend taking pictures of the car from different angles when you pick it up; this way, you'll have evidence in case any issues arise when you return the car.
Understand the insurance policy
When you rent a car in Tangier, it typically includes basic insurance, which may be subject to a significant excess or deductible if any damage occurs. This standard insurance usually covers theft, third-party damage and liability, but you could be liable for the first 10,000 dirhams (around 1000 USD) in the event of an incident.

It’s not uncommon to encounter donkeys, camels and goats leisurely crossing the roads, especially in the countryside. With few pedestrian walkways, many locals also walk on the roads (which are viewed as shared spaces), so it's essential to drive cautiously and remember that being in a vehicle doesn’t automatically grant you the right of way.
I also want to mention that the driving habits of Moroccans may be different from what you are used to back home, especially the frequent use of horns. It’s nothing to be offended by - it’s usually just someone signalling their presence on the road and asking you to give way.

In rural areas, it's not unusual to come across potholes and other obstacles, like livestock wandering onto the roads. The highways and toll roads connecting Morocco's major cities are typically in great shape, but the secondary roads in the countryside can be a different story. We've travelled extensively around the country without a 4x4 and faced no problems at all. The roads that tourists most commonly use are generally paved, making them ideal for a compact rental car.
That being said, if you're looking for a more adventurous experience in Morocco, choosing a four-wheel-drive vehicle is a smart choice. The rugged paths and trails in the High Atlas Mountains demand the extra traction and ground clearance that a 4x4 offers and many routes in the Sahara Desert are not suitable for smaller cars.
If you plan on venturing onto unpaved roads, it’s important to check the terms and conditions of your rental contract. Some rental companies don’t allow you to take vehicles on gravel roads and you won’t be covered by their insurance policy if you do.
Do police ask for bribes when driving in Morocco?
You may have come across blog posts or heard from fellow travellers about the "inevitable" police stops in Morocco, with some suggesting that the only way to handle these situations is by paying bribes. It's completely understandable to feel anxious about this and to think twice about renting a car in Tangier to steer clear of such encounters.
However, in my own experiences driving in Morocco, I’ve never encountered a police officer asking for a bribe. My husband believes this is because I am visibly a foreigner, rather than a local. He also recalled an incident from a few years ago when a tourist on a motorcycle recorded a police officer soliciting a bribe, which led to consequences for that officer.
Since then, it seems that police have started to view tourists as "off limits" for such demands or perhaps the bribery culture on Moroccan roads is changing as a whole. From what I've gathered in conversations, most tourists pass through police checkpoints without any problems. The only time you might actually need to pay a fine is if you are genuinely violating local traffic laws.
