Everything You Need to Know About Skiing in Morocco

Updated: Oct 21

While Morocco may not be the first destination that springs to mind when you think of a ski holiday, this North African nation has a couple of hidden gems for winter sports enthusiasts. Tucked away within the snow-capped peaks of the Atlas Mountains, you’ll find well-groomed slopes catering to skiers and snowboarders, accompanied by an experience that is all about cultural immersion…and incredible scenery!

Contrary to common perceptions, the Atlas Mountains do receive substantial snowfall during the winter months, making them an ideal setting for a range of cold-weather activities. The amount of snow can vary significantly across the range, with the High Atlas and Middle Atlas generally seeing the most significant accumulations. Snowfall can range anywhere from a few centimetres to several metres in the highest elevations.

Whether you're an experienced skier or a complete beginner, Morocco’s ski resorts offer the perfect combination of challenging mountain terrain, magnificent vistas and the chance to experience the Moroccan way of life.

In this article, discover everything you need to know about skiing in Morocco, including the best places to go, how to get there and recommended accommodations.

Where can you ski in Morocco?

Morocco has two main skiing destinations that offer a fun experience for winter sports enthusiasts. In the High Atlas Mountains near Marrakech is Oukaïmeden, which sits at an elevation of around 3,000 metres and boasts a series of well-groomed runs that wind through a dramatic, snow-capped landscape. Further north in the Middle Atlas Mountains is Michlifen, a lower-altitude ski resort near the Swiss-inspired town of Ifrane and easily accessible from Fes.

While the ski infrastructure and amenities in these Moroccan mountain resorts may not rival the world-class facilities found in Europe or North America, they make up for it with their intimacy and affordability. Skiers and snowboarders have the opportunity to carve fresh tracks through pristine powder, all while surrounded by the iconic peaks of the Atlas Mountains. It's a skiing experience unlike any other, blending the thrill of winter sports with the distinct culture of this North African nation.

Oukaïmeden - High Atlas Mountains

Once the snow begins to fall, Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains transform into a winter wonderland, home to the country's most well-known skiing destination - Oukaïmeden. At 3,000 metres, it is the highest ski resort in Africa. Combined with its northerly latitude, its elevation creates the perfect conditions for an extended winter sports season with a distinctly Moroccan atmosphere.

Visitors to Oukaïmeden can take advantage of up to 10 kilometres of well-groomed, varied slopes catering to all ability levels. The resort boasts seven lifts, including six drag-lifts that service the beginner's slope and intermediate-level runs, along with a single chairlift that provides access to the more advanced terrain. While Oukaïmeden may not offer the expansive run systems found at many Western ski destinations, it still presents a worthwhile challenge for more experienced skiers.

What makes this Moroccan winter sports hub truly unique, however, is the juxtaposition of its alpine environment with the distinct culture of North Africa. From the traditional architecture of the resort's lodges and chalets to the enticing aromas of Moroccan cuisine wafting through the air, it feels completely different from a European ski holiday!

Michlifen - Middle Atlas Mountains

In the northern reaches of Morocco, the Middle Atlas Mountains offer spectacular winter scenery that probably contrasts to what you’d expect in this North African nation. Centred around the charming town of Ifrane, this region is home to the Michlifen Ski Resort, which provides a uniquely Moroccan twist on the classic ski holiday.

The resort itself is relatively small in scale, with just two ski lifts transporting skiers and snowboarders up to an elevation of around 2,000 metres. But the intimate size is welcomed by many, creating a more relaxed, less crowded atmosphere compared to European and North American ski destinations.

The slopes themselves, while not as steep and challenging as those found in the High Atlas Mountains, still provide an enjoyable descent for skiers of all abilities. And for families seeking an alternative to the pistes, the surrounding hills offer ample opportunities for sledding and playing in the snow.

The town of Ifrane serves as an idyllic home base, with its alpine-inspired architecture and ambiance evoking the feel of a Swiss mountain village. In fact, it’s often referred to as the "Switzerland of Morocco." Many of the buildings feature sloping roofs and half-timbered facades while the surrounding gardens are meticulously tended in a European style.

Travellers who venture to Michlifen will be rewarded with an unexpected winter experience, blending the cultural allure of Morocco with the familiar pleasures of a snow-filled getaway. Whether you're an avid skier or simply want to enjoy the novelty of playing in the Moroccan snow, a visit to the Middle Atlas in winter promises to be a one-of-a-kind adventure.
