Tips for finding a family hotel in Marrakech
Marrakech is undoubtedly a captivating destination, with gorgeous architecture, incredible culinary experiences and alluring souks to discover. It can be an overwhelming sensory experience for parents and children alike, with an energy unlike any other Moroccan city.
Finding a family-friendly hotel in Marrakech ensures you have somewhere to retreat to when it all gets too much. It’s a space for you and the kids to recharge before heading out again.
If you’re thinking about staying at a family hotel in the Marrakech medina, it’s important to think about access. Remember, the medina is pedestrian-only – you can’t just drive right up to the entrance and drop off your bags!
If you’re driving yourself, there are a number of staffed parking areas close to the medina’s entrances. These are safer than leaving your rental car parked on the street.
Once you’ve made your booking, the property will typically contact you to inform you about the nearest and safest parking area, as well as directions to the property on foot. They can also organise for someone to meet you at the parking spot. Just send them a WhatsApp message when you arrive so you can easily connect!
If you’re catching a taxi from Marrakech Menara Airport, you can check Google Maps to see which gate (“bab”) is closest to your accommodation.
Top tip:
If you’re worried about haggling for a taxi at the airport, you can arrange a trustworthy, fixed-price transfer through Welcome Pickups. The driver will greet you at the airport (look for a sign with your name) and can coordinate with someone from the hotel to meet you on the edge of the medina.
The majority of family riads and hotels in Marrakech also provide airport pickup services. This makes things significantly easier than attempting to find your way through the maze of streets on your own!
When planning your family holiday in Marrakech, remember to consider the noise from bars or clubs that play music late into the night. You can use Google Maps to find out if there are any near your chosen riad or hotel.
Generally speaking, I recommend steering clear of accommodations that are too close to Djemaa el-Fnaa. This area tends to be the loudest in the Marrakech medina.
Whether the Fajr adhan (the dawn call to prayer from Marrakech’s mosques) disturbs your sleep largely hinges on the soundproofing of your hotel. Typically, the more upscale the accommodation, the better the sound insulation.
I recommend packing some earplugs, just to be safe, particularly if you or your kids are light sleepers.
Finally, keep in mind that every hotel in Marrakech is obligated to collect a government-mandated tourist tax. This tax needs to be paid directly to the hotel and is typically not included in your booking rate.
It applies to all guests over the age of 12 and is usually settled either at check-in or when you check out from your family-friendly Marrakech hotel.
