11 Amazing Hotels in Taghazout: Morocco’s Surfing Heartland

Looking for the best hotels in Taghazout or the best places to stay in Tamraght? Discover inspiring accommodation options along Morocco’s surf coast for all budgets and travel styles.

Taghazout is the place you go if you’re seeking endless waves, daily yoga sessions and cafes serving health-conscious food. It’s a laid-back Amazigh village between Agadir and Essaouira. Although not as laid-back as its near neighbour, Tamraght, around three kilometres down the road.

I’ve been lucky enough to live in both villages and have some unique insights when it comes to accommodation in the area. Not only are there some fantastic surfer-friendly hotels for budget-conscious travellers but also an (ever increasing) choice of luxury beachfront stays.

In the villages themselves, you’ll find spacious apartments that are perfect for families, as well as boutique guesthouses offering unique stays.

Since becoming a haven for hippies in the 1960s, Taghazout has steadily established itself as one of the world’s premier surfing destinations.

Though waves crash along the entirety of Morocco’s western shores, it is the stretch of coast around Taghazout that attracts hordes of wave riders – both beginners and seasoned pros – from across the globe.

If you’re searching for a quieter alternative, the nearby village of Tamraght offers just that. In fact, after a few months of living in Taghazout, we moved down to Tamraght for a more serene atmosphere.

Between the two, you have access to an incredible choice of waves, from legendary Anchor Point to beginner-friendly Kro Kro and (slightly quieter) Banana Point.

In this article, I’ll highlight some of the best hotels in Taghazout and the best places to stay in Tamraght, from convivial surf hostels to boutique guesthouses brimming with charm.

Please note:

There’s been a LOT of development around Taghazout and Tamraght in recent years. Some HUGE resorts have sprung up along the coastline and it has impacted the small village “feel”. That being said, I think Taghazout is still a special place for those seeking waves and a spirit of connectivity. Just visit knowing that it can get really busy, both in and out of the water.

Tips for finding the best hotels in Taghazout and Tamraght

When selecting the best hotel in Taghazout or Tamraght to meet your needs, there are a few things to keep in mind.

First, determine your budget and the type of accommodations you want. Taghazout and Tamraght offer a huge range of options, from budget-friendly surf hostels to luxury boutique hotels and all-inclusive oceanfront resorts.

Cheaper accommodations tend to have fewer facilities while those at the upper end boast everything from wellness centres and spas to well-equipped gyms and multiple pools.

Most of the hostels in Taghazout and Tamraght provide shared kitchens, making them ideal for travellers watching their dirhams. You can also find affordable apartments with self-catering facilities for preparing some (or all) of your own meals.

At the other end of the spectrum, Taghazout’s luxury resorts and Tamraght’s high-end hotels boast gourmet restaurants serving food from around the globe. Expect European prices to match!

Next, consider the hotel’s location. If you want to be in the heart of all the action, look for hotels in the villages of Taghazout and Tamraght themselves. This will put you within walking distance of cafes and restaurants, as well as surf shops offering board rentals and lessons.

Top tip:

Be aware that cheaper properties in Taghazout may not be well sound-proofed and Moroccans (usually) don’t go to be early! When you add in the early morning call to prayer sounding from the mosque, I’d recommend bringing a set of earplugs, just in case.

When it comes to surf breaks, Kro-Kro is within walking distance of Tamraght while Panorama can easily be reached on foot from Taghazout. Most of the other breaks require a vehicle to access (unless you’re happy to walk a long distance with a board). Surf schools usually provide transport as part of their packages.

Lastly, be sure to read reviews from previous guests to get a better idea of the hotel’s atmosphere and the overall experience of staying there. Pay special attention to comments about cleanliness, staff friendliness and any unique perks the hotel may offer. R

emember, reviews from other travellers can provide a wealth of information not found on official hotel websites.

In my opinion, the best hotels in Taghazout and the best hotels in Tamraght all have one thing in common. They strive to create an atmosphere that’s warm and convivial, whether you’re here to surf or just soak up the coastal vibes.

While some have onsite yoga shalas and surf schools (making them convenient if you’re there to progress), all are just a stone’s throw from beautiful Atlantic Ocean beaches.
