Tips for selecting a luxury hotel in Essaouira
If you’re planning to stay at a luxury riad in the Essaouira medina, it’s important to consider accessibility. Remember, the medina is pedestrianised, so you can’t simply drive up to the front door and unload your luggage.
If you’re self-driving, there is a large parking area at the port (near Bab El Marsa) and another at Bab Marrakech (right next door to Heure Bleue Palais). Here, you can leave your car overnight for a fee and an attendant will keep an eye on it for you.
If you’re coming by taxi from the airport, you can check online at Google Maps to see which gate (“bab”) is closest to your accommodation. Just ask the driver to drop you there.
That being said, most Essaouira riads and hotels will contact guests after booking to notify them of the best way to access the property. They will likely also provide an option for airport pickup.
Top tip:
I highly recommend organising an airport transfer with the hotel (particularly if it’s your first time visiting Essaouira). Alternatively, you can book a reliable, fixed-price journey with Welcome Pickups.
The driver who picks you up from the airport can communicate with someone from the hotel/riad. Hopefully, they will come to meet you at the parking area (often with a trolley for your luggage) and guide you to the property.
These pickups often cost a bit more than getting a taxi independently at the airport. But they will save you the hassle of trying to find the hotel once you reach the medina gates.
When selecting a luxury hotel in Essaouira, it’s also worth considering noise, both from the local mosques (of which there are many in the medina) and from the few bars that play music until late at night.
Most of these bars are located near the harbour around Place Moulay Hassan, with Taros being the most popular. If you’re someone who likes to get an early night, I would avoid booking a hotel near Taros, even if the Gnaoua music they play is amazing!
When it comes to mosques, there are so many that they are more difficult to avoid. Whether you are woken by the Fajr adhan (the call to prayer at the break of dawn) will depend more on the hotel’s soundproofing.
Top tip:
If you are staying inside the Essaouira medina, I’d recommend packing earplugs, particularly if you like to sleep in late.
Personally, I love listening to the early morning call to prayer, then falling back asleep. But I understand that’s not the same for everyone. If you don’t want to stay near a mosque, then I’d suggest somewhere like Maison Kasba Bonheur or Baberrih Hotel.
Lastly, be aware that all Essaouira hotels and riads are subject to a government-mandated tourist tax. This is payable by guests directly to the property and is NOT included in the booking rate.
This tax contributes to the local community and is usually paid either at check-in or on departure. So don’t be caught off guard if your hotel requests this additional payment.
