Tips for finding an affordable riad in Marrakech
As you can see, a budget stay in Marrakech doesn’t mean missing out on the authenticity and charm of a traditional Moroccan riad. Staying in one of these beautifully restored homes is a cultural experience in itself. Plus, the hospitality is always second to none.
So rather than looking for a cheap hotel in Marrakech outside the medina, I’d encourage you to find an affordable riad that meets your budget and travel needs.
Since most riads in Marrakech are situated within the medina, it’s crucial to think about accessibility (the medina is car-free). This means you won’t be able to drive right up to the entrance to unload your luggage. I’d recommend checking how near the riad is to one of Marrakech’s “babs,” as there are typically parking options and taxi drop-off areas just outside these.
Top tip:
If you plan to drive yourself, there are a number of parking areas with attendants near the entrances of the medina. These offer better security than leaving your rental car parked on the street. Negotiate a price with the attendant beforeheand.
Once you finalise your reservation, your Marrakech riad will usually contact you with information about the closest and safest parking options. They’ll also provide directions for walking to the property (you can also find this information using Google Maps).
They might even arrange for someone to greet you at the parking area and walk you to the property. Men with trolleys are usually available at parking areas outside the medina and can transport your luggage. Always negotiate their fee beforehand!
Almost all hotels and riads in Marrakech provide an airport pickup service and I strongly suggest utilising this for a stress-free experience. Alternatively, you can secure a fixed-price airport transfer in Marrakech through Welcome Pickups.
A driver will be at the airport waiting for you, holding a sign with your name, and they will coordinate with someone from your riad to meet you in the parking area. This is much easier than trying to navigate the complex streets by yourself!
Top tip:
Before booking a budget riad in Marrakech, it’s a good idea to consider the noise from nearby bars and clubs, as well as the sounds from the many mosques in the medina. If you’re a light sleeper and are concerned about being woken by the Fajr adhan (the dawn call to prayer), I recommend bringing along some earplugs.
Additionally, keep in mind that all riads in Marrakech are obligated to collect a government-mandated tourist tax. This tax needs to be paid directly to the hotel and is typically not included in your booking rate (although it should be disclosed at the time of booking). It is usually settled either at check-in or when you check out from your Marrakech riad.
