Tips for finding the best hotels in Chefchaouen

As Chefchaouen becomes more and more popular due to its Insta-worthy streets, the accommodation choices in this blue-hued mountain town are only increasing. But before booking the first hotel that piques your interest, there are a few things to keep in mind.

When searching for a hotel in Chefchaouen, it’s best to focus your efforts on accommodations located in or near the medina. This historic district, with its narrow streets, is home to most of its cultural attractions, souks and restaurants. Alternatively, I’d recommend finding a place to stay in the hills surrounding the “Blue Pearl”. Many offer incredible views across the city.

Staying in the medina puts you within easy walking distance of Plaza Uta el-Hammam square. Here you’ll find Chefchaouen’s striking Grand Mosque and Kasbah Museum. As soon as you step outside the front door of your Chefchaouen hotel, you’ll be surrounded by the blue streets for which the city is so famed.

You’ll also be within a stone’s throw of numerous restaurants serving up traditional Moroccan cuisine, as well as Spanish favourites such as paella (northern Morocco has a distinct Spanish influence).

Top tip:

Keep in mind that the medina is car-free and most of the best Chefchaouen hotels are about a 20-minute uphill walk from the bus station. That being said, taxis are readily available to whisk you (and your luggage) as close as possible to the front door. There’s a taxi drop-off point on the eastern edge of Plaza Uta el-Hammam

After making a booking, the hotel or guesthouse may contact you directly to explain the best way of accessing the property. Alternatively, I suggest you download a map of Chefchaouen from Google Maps so you can navigate there independently.

Some Chefchaouen hotels provide transfer services from Tangier and Fes, with someone meeting you on the edge of the medina and guiding you to the property. While they may be slightly more expensive than booking a transfer independently, this is a hassle-free way to reach your Chefchaouen hotel.
