While the train and bus networks in Morocco cover a lot of ground, having your own vehicle gives you a whole new level of freedom.

By finding a cheap hire car in Marrakech, you can stray from the usual tourist spots. Instead, you’ll be able to find those hidden gems that you just can’t reach by public transport. And trust me, Morocco has a lot of them! We’ve rented a car in Marrakech several times and it’s allowed us to explore destinations that would be really difficult to see without our own wheels.

Many travellers fly directly into the “Red City” and start their road trip there. So it makes sense that Marrakech is one of the most popular places to rent a car in Morocco. Although I wouldn’t advise driving within Marrakech itself due to its hectic roads (the medina is car-free anyway), it’s a convenient spot to find a cheap rental car in Morocco and discover everything the country has to offer.

Not only will you have the freedom to design your own travel plans, but spend more time in places that truly capture your interest, instead of being tied to bus or train timetables. That being said, it’s important to do your research before booking a rental car in Marrakech and understand what you can expect behind the wheel. Driving in Morocco is not for everyone…but it’s also easier than you might think!

If you’re curious about the cost of renting a car in Marrakech, I have some great news. Morocco is a really budget-friendly travel destination when it comes to car hire! For instance, you can rent a cheap hire car in Marrakech for just USD40 a week, which breaks down to just over USD5 per day.

If you’re considering upgrading to a bigger vehicle, you can rent an SUV in Marrakech for less than USD175 for a week. Keep in mind that these prices do not include any extra (optional) insurance fees and are for advance bookings (not last-minute).

 In addition to the low prices, the best rental cars in Marrakech are usually of good quality, although they may have a few scratches and bumps on their exterior. Many of the vehicles are either brand new or well-cared for and ideal for exploring the country’s varied terrains.

Local vs international car rental companies in Marrakech

If you’re looking for cheap car hire in Marrakech, you’ll find well-known international companies like Budget, Thrifty, Europcar and Hertz have a solid presence. Most have locations both in the city centre and at Marrakech Menara Airport. So you can choose whichever suits you better.

Despite being familiar names, these large rental firms may not always offer the best deals or service in Morocco. In reality, their prices can often be much steeper than those of smaller, local rental agencies. Unfortunately, the quality of the cars and customer service may not always warrant the higher costs.

If you’re looking for the cheapest hire cars in Marrakech, consider going with local companies like Aircar, 1Service Car and autoUnion. Although they might not be as well-known to international travellers, these Moroccan car rental suppliers offer more affordable rates and many receive positive feedback online.

Personally, I’ve rented a vehicle with Aircar before and didn’t have any issues. For my chosen dates, it was significantly cheaper than what was being offered by the big-name rental brands.

The great thing about searching for Marrakech hire cars at Discover Cars is you can find options from both international and local rental companies. Compare rates and read reviews to find the one that suits your needs and offers the best deals for your travel dates.

Tips for renting a car in Morocco

Always check the car thoroughly before driving off

Before you drive off, it’s really important to give the vehicle a good inspection from top to bottom. Hire cars in Marrakech may show signs of wear and tear. This might include dents, scratches and other cosmetic flaws inflicted by previous renters. If there’s any doubt as to who was responsible, the rental company could try to charge you for these issues when you return the vehicle.

The solution? Be thorough with your initial inspection and document any imperfections you find!

While most attendants will do a walk-through with a paper diagram of the car, it can be challenging to note down every marking. This is particularly true if you’re dealing with jet lag or travel fatigue.

Personally, I don’t really care if a car has a few cosmetic scratches. I always feel more anxious driving a rental vehicle that’s in perfect condition!

Understand the insurance policy

When you rent a car in Marrakech, it usually includes basic insurance. This standard coverage protects against theft, third-party damage and liability. However, there’s usually a high excess (a set amount of money you pay towards an insurance claim) if any issues occur. Realistically you might need to cover the first 10,000 dirhams (around $1000 USD) yourself.

If you want extra protection, it’s a good idea to consider “refundable excess” insurance. Most Marrakech rental companies will try to sell this to you when you pick up the vehicle. This extra coverage takes care of that large deductible, providing you with reassurance that you won’t face a significant expense in case of an accident.

When renting a car in Marrakech through Discover Cars, you’ll find that Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection are usually included in the standard rental agreement. That being said, always check the rental conditions before making a booking so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you want added security, purchase the “refundable excess” option at pickup.

In Morocco, the legal age to drive is 18. But many car rental agencies in Marrakech prefer to rent vehicles only to those who are 21 or older. Additionally, they often ask that drivers have had their license for a minimum of one year before renting a vehicle to them.

Additionally, it’s essential to carry proof of insurance to present if you happen to be stopped at one of the many police or gendarme checkpoints in Morocco. Basic insurance is provided with all rentals through Discover Cars, which is adequate for vehicle inspections on the road.

It’s important to pay attention to the road signs and adjust your speed as needed to steer clear of any fines.

In some parts of Morocco, it’s best to drive at a slower pace than the posted speed limit because of the unique traffic conditions. It’s quite normal to see donkeys, camels and goats trotting along the roads, especially in the countryside. And with few pedestrian walkways available in rural areas, many locals walk on the asphalt itself. It really is a shared space!

This calls for careful driving. You shouldn’t assume that being in a car automatically gives you the right of way.!Market days can be particularly busy when passing through towns. Slow your pace to a crawl and you’ll avoid any issues. Plus, you’ll be able to enjoy all the comings and goings!

Understand your rental rights

When looking for cheap car hire in Marrakech, it’s important to focus on quality, rather than just renting the vehicle with the lowest price. I highly recommend sorting your search results by customer ratings. This will help you easily spot the providers that consistently offer outstanding service and great value to their customers.

On the left side of the Discover Cars search results, you’ll see various filtering options. One of these allows you to show only listings with a rating of 8 stars or more. I always make use of this feature because I think it’s not worth saving a few dirhams if it means a disappointing rental experience.

Beyond the city, I think the independence and flexibility of having your own vehicle far outweighs any minor challenges you might face along the way. Instead of depending on public transport or guided tours, booking a cheap hire car in Marrakech lets you travel at your own pace. Along the way, you can take unexpected side trips and explore hidden gems that many tourists overlook.

Keep in mind that the rental prices for these Multi-Purpose Utility Vehicles (MUVs) are generally on the higher side. Running them (gas/petrol) is also more expensive.

We’ve travelled extensively without ever renting a 4×4 and haven’t faced any problems. Typically, the roads are generally well-paved and in reasonable condition, making a compact rental car in Morocco sufficient.

For those adventurers looking for a more rugged and off-the-beaten-track experience, choosing a four-wheel-drive vehicle is definitely a smart choice. The unpaved roads and trails winding through the High Atlas Mountains require the extra traction and ground clearance that a 4×4 offers. Also, many routes in the Sahara Desert are not suitable for compact cars.

Do you have to pay police bribes driving in Morocco?

You may have come across blog posts warning about the numerous police checks in Morocco. Some people say these can only be settled by paying bribes. It’s understandable if this makes you feel anxious about renting a car in Marrakech altogether.

 Despite all my time driving in Morocco and the many police checks I have stopped at, I’ve never encountered an officer who asked for a bribe. My husband believes this is because I clearly don’t look like a local!

It’s hard to say if the culture of bribery in Morocco has shifted or if I’ve just been fortunate. But I feel like most tourists breeze through police checkpoints. The only time you might need to pay a fine is if you’re genuinely violating traffic laws.
