Having visited this Rif Mountains city multiple times, I really do think it should be at the top of your “must-visit” list. You can breathe in the fresh mountain air, feast on fruit cups beside cascades and photograph to your heart’s content in the blue-coloured streets.
While Chefchaouen can easily be visited on a day trip from Tangier, Fes or Casablanca, I would highly recommend spending a night (or few) to really soak up its charms. Once the day-trippers have left for the day, the medina is that much more enchanting. Oh, and there are some fantastic places to stay!
In truth, Chefchaouen doesn’t have the ultra-luxurious hotels you’ll find in places like Marrakech. But there are some wonderful riads and dars that offer high-end stays.

Perched atop a small hill overlooking the city is Dar Echchaouen. This gorgeous hotel offers magnificent views across Chefchaouen from many of its rooms.
While it’s not located in the medina (like some of the other luxury Chefchaouen hotels on this list), it’s just 10 minutes’ walk from Place Outa el Hammam. This puts it well within reach of all the city’s attractions.
Aside from its beautifully appointed double rooms and suites (the wooden ceilings are stunning!), Dar Echchaoeun features a family room that can accommodate four people. There’s a pretty little courtyard and a pool for swimming in the warmer months – a rare treat in the “Blue Pearl”.
