Visiting Fes in June: Weather + Festivals + Things to Do

Is June a good time to visit Fes? With the arrival of summer comes hot temperatures that can make sightseeing in the medina uncomfortable. But you can escape the worst of the heat if you visit Fes early in the month or focus your sightseeing in the morning and evening when temperatures are at their coolest.

Compared to July and August, crowds aren’t at their heaviest in June. The summer holidays not yet in full swing. As a result, Fes el-Bali has a slightly more relaxed vibe to it and there’s more room to move at popular tourist attractions.

Accommodation prices also reflect this, making June a good time to visit Fes for those who love a deal. By booking a riad or hotel with air conditioning and/or a pool, you will have somewhere to retreat to in the middle of the day when the mercury reaches its peak.

In this article, discover everything you need to know about visiting Fes in June, from the weather to crowds and special events. I’ll also share with you some of the best things to do in Fes in June to help you plan a seasonally suitable itinerary.

Fes weather in June

During the month of June, temperatures in Fes typically range from mild to hot, with daytime highs often reaching around 32°C (90°F). The evenings drop to much cooler temperatures, with lows of around 16°C (61°F ). I’d recommend bringing a light sweater or jacket for evening outings.

Fes experiences relatively low levels of rainfall in June, with an average precipitation of about 17 mm throughout the month. Generally speaking, you can anticipate around four days of rain during June. You can probably get away without bringing a waterproof if you’re trying to pack lightly.

Is June a busy time in Fes?

Because Fes has a reputation for being really hot during the summer months, June isn’t the busiest time in the city. Most tourists try to visit when the temperatures aren’t so high. March to May and September to November are generally considered the best months in Fes.

As a result, June can be a good time to avoid the crowds, provided you can handle the heat!

After the influx of visitors in May (to coincide with the Festival of World Sacred Music), the medina tends to be a bit quieter. Generally speaking, you can expect thinner crowds at the city’s most popular tourist attractions.

Riad and hotel rates may dip slightly in June due to the reduced demand. This can be a great time to visit if you want to stretch your budget a little further.

What’s on in Fes in June

With no public holidays or festivities on the calendar, February is a relatively quiet month in Fes. In my opinion, one of the best things to do if you’re visiting Fes in June is to take a cooking class. Culinary workshops are held throughout the month at cooking schools and riads across the city.

Cooking classes

As the “Culinary Capital of Morocco”, Fes is a must-visit destination for foodies. For me, it’s the perfect place to do a cooking class. Not only will you learn the secrets of traditional Moroccan cuisine but also the Fassi specialties of Fes.

Under the guidance of skilled local chefs, you’ll have the opportunity to create aromatic tagines, fluffy couscous and hearty harira soup using fresh, seasonal ingredients.

Best things to do in Fes in June

Even if the daytime temperatures are scorching hot, no visit to Fes is complete without exploring the medina of Fes el-Bali. This UNESCO World Heritage-listed area is filled with architectural treasures, artisan workshops and traditional souks, as well as one of Morocco’s most well-known tanneries.

Top tip:

If you’re visiting Fes in June, head out early to avoid the worst of the heat. Then retreat to your (air-conditioned) riad in the middle of the day to relax or have a siesta.

Another way to escape the heat is to visit one of Fes’ fascinating museums. I particularly love the Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Crafts with its ornate doors and mashrabiya screens.

Dar Batha is renowned for its ceramics collection and another museum highlight. Meanwhile, the Museum of Arms at Borj Nord features an extensive array of weaponry, some of which was manufactured in Fes.

In my opinion, Fes is one of the best places in Morocco to do a cooking class. Options range from highly structured courses to laid-back family affairs. Palais Amani is particularly renowned for its cooking school and the rooftop setting is incredible!

There are lots of additional food tours and experiences available in Fes to learn about (and taste) Fassi cuisine.

Is June a good time to visit Fes?

Generally speaking, the best times to visit Fes are between March and May (spring) and September to November (autumn). During these periods, the weather is pleasantly mild.

So while June isn’t ideal due to the increasingly hot temperatures, you can still have a wonderful experience in Fes.

Personally, I’d recommend planning your trip at the start of the month before the temperatures get too hot. If you are visiting Fes in June, try to be strategic about when you are out and about in the medina. Early mornings and evenings offer the coolest temperatures.
